Morning Pages — The Warm-Up No One Sees

Morning pages are three pages of longhand writing done first thing — the warm-up no one sees. The point isn't good writing; it's clearing a runway.

What morning pages actually are

The term comes from Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way: three pages of stream-of-consciousness longhand, every morning, before the day crowds in. You write whatever comes. You don't read them. You don't show anyone.

Why they work

Most of your day is already half-written before it starts — worries, to-dos, a loop you haven't named. Three pages dump that onto paper so it stops running in the background. The mind that's been holding it all gets to put it down.

How to do them without making them another chore

  • ·Pick a scene with light — the harbor or wildflowers.
  • ·Write by hand or on a blank page; either works.
  • ·Don't stop to reread. Don't edit.
  • ·If you have nothing to say, write that until something else shows up.
  • ·No word count. Three 'pages' is a feeling, not a rule.

And if you miss a day

You miss a day. Morning pages aren't a streak. Skip the guilt, write tomorrow. The point is the clearing, not the chain.
